About LVA

The Vibration and Acoustic Laboratory (LVA) is a laboratory from the Mechanical Engineering Department (EMC) at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), which was created with the aims of developing research in vibration and acoustics and to provide solutions to many of the problems in the field faced by the Brazilian industry.

The LVA was founded in 1980 with the aim of supporting the then recently created research line in vibration and acoustics of the Graduate Program in Mechanical Engineering (POSMEC) at UFSC. The new research line was an answer to the increasing number of problems involving noise and vibration faced by the Brazilian industry.

During its first years, the LVA was run in collaboration with the Institute of Sound and Vibration – ISVR, UK, where some of LVA staff have undertaken their graduate studies. Soon, the LVA became a centre of excellence for research and training in acoustics and vibration, establishing partnerships with the main Brazilian companies from different sectors, such as EMBRACO, EMBRAER, FIAT, GM, Ford, etc. These partnerships generated a large amount of knowledge in applied research in acoustics and vibration, and resulted in the education of many professionals at Master Degree and Ph.D. levels that are now responsible for the area at many Brazilian companies.

Initially, research at LVA was focused on the solution of problems involving industrial noise, but soon its research activities expanded to include acoustic and vibration materials (porous-elastic and viscoelastic materials), experimental methods for the diagnostic and analysis of vibroacoustic problems (modal analysis techniques and beamforming), numerical methods in vibroacoustics (FEM, BEM, SEA and the Hybrid FE-SEA method), optimization techniques applied to vibroacoustics, and, more recently, aeroacoustics and hearing aids.

Besides its research and education activities, the LVA also undertakes consultancy services to industry and government departments and offer specific experimental tests in acoustic and vibration.

 

INFRASTRUCTURE AND EQUIPMENT:

 

Currently under the coordination of Professor Arcanjo Lenzi, the LVA has at its disposal a large infrastructure, including last generation equipment, to carry on its research and teaching activities in acoustic and vibration. Such infrastructure includes:

  • Two reverberant chambers;
  • One semi-anechoic chamber;
  • On anechoic chamber for aeroacoustic tests (under construction);
  • One chamber with temperature control (-30 oC a 50 oC) for vibration tests;
  • Class and meeting rooms;
  • Several digital analysers and signal acquisition systems (B&K, LMS, NI, etc);
  • Large number of transducers for vibration and acoustic tests (accelerometers, microphones, laser vibrometers, pressure sensors, impact hammers, impedance heads, etc);
  • Large number of specific equipment for vibration and acoustic tests (Sound level meters, calibrators, loudspeakers, shakers, power amplifiers, etc);
  • Equipment for psychoacoustic and jury tests (artificial head KEMAR and HeadAcoustics, equalizers, headphones, etc);
  • Several software for experimental analysis (B&K Pulse, LMS Test.Lab, NI Labview, HeadAcoustics Artemis, etc);
  • Several software for numerical simulation (ESI VA-One, LMS Virtual.Lab, MSC Nastran/Patran, COMSOL, etc);
